Zone awareness without turnstiles: why continuous reads win

Safety Detection Points and safety tags give you zone-level awareness across an entire site without requiring people to pass through a turnstile. That matters most during evacuation, when funnelling people through choke points is exactly what you do not want.
Turnstiles are a boundary tool
Turnstiles do one job well: they control who crosses the site boundary. They are the right place for right-to-work and induction checks, and for stopping tailgating at the front gate. Nobody is arguing against them there.
The problem starts when a turnstile count is treated as a safety record. A badge-in at 07:12 tells you someone entered the site. It does not tell you they are still here, which building they walked into, or whether they left through a vehicle gate at lunchtime. By mid-afternoon the entry log and the reality on the ground have quietly drifted apart.
During an emergency that gap is dangerous. A turnstile-based system can only report who badged in that day, not who is actually inside a specific building or zone right now. That is the one thing an incident commander most needs to know.
Choke points are the last thing you want in an evacuation
Turnstiles are, by design, choke points: they slow people down and force them through a single line one at a time. That is useful for access control and exactly wrong for getting people out. You do not want a queue forming at a barrier while an alarm is sounding.
They are also single points of failure. A jammed turnstile, a power fault, or a crush of people arriving at once can turn the one route you rely on into the one route that fails. Evacuation planning under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 leans the other way: clear routes, multiple exits, no bottlenecks.
Reads at the points that matter
Safety Detection Points take a different approach. Instead of one barrier at the perimeter, discreet fixed units sit at the gates, muster points and zone thresholds that matter, and every worker carries a safety tag. As people move naturally around the site, each Safety Detection Point reads the tags that pass, with no stopping, scanning or queuing.
The result is continuous zone awareness: at any moment you can see roughly who is in each area, and during a muster a single point can read up to 500 tags at once and mark everyone at that assembly point safe automatically. People carry on moving the way they always did; the site simply knows where they were last detected.
