Safer opening and closing, and losses turned into alerts.

The chain runs a large estate of high-street stores where colleagues routinely open up and close down alone, and work out of back-of-house stockrooms away from the shop floor. Retail violence and abuse have risen sharply in recent years, and the chain also carried steady losses of high-value stock leaving through service doors. Its duty under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 to assess and control lone-working and violence risk was hard to evidence store by store.

The deployment was standardised for fast, repeatable store rollouts. Each store was surveyed for entrances, stockrooms and service doors; Safety Detection Points were installed at those points; colleagues were issued safety tags that double as a discreet, located duress alert; and high-value stock and equipment was tagged. A common template meant a store could be brought online quickly and consistently.

The operational payoff runs across safety and loss. A threat during opening, closing or a stockroom shift triggers a located alert to someone who can respond, stock leaving through a service door without authorisation is flagged at the threshold rather than found missing at stocktake, and a store evacuation is counted accurately at the muster point instead of guessed.

For the retailer, the same tag that protects a lone colleague also produces the auditable record that turns its lone-worker risk assessments from a policy into demonstrable practice for boards and insurers.
